D - F

If the dream is a translation of waking life,
waking life is also a translation of the dream.

--Rene Magritte (1849-1912), Surrealist

D

Dam: A blockage of disbelief or misunderstanding of spiritual Self's ideals or principles on the emotional river of life. See Spirit.

Danger: A sense of danger in a dream reflects the Ego’s wish to avoid any encounter with Unconscious elements it finds painful, repulsive or terrifying.

Also: If you are in a dangerous situation in your dream, you may consider this a sign from your unconscious. Take the hint and pay closer attention to your finances, business matters, health, and things in general. If you faced the danger in your dream, it may be a positive sign and an indication that you are capable of overcoming current obstacles.
Death: Nearly any dream you have that refers to death, dying or attending a funeral, or the like, pertain to change. Most all the time this change is very dramatic and major. It can be change in your life attitude or emotional balance. These types of dreams can also symbolize confronting fear, usually fear of death or change. Since most of use will agree that death is the ultimate change, and many people fear it. Death dreams are generally big changes and should never be ignored. Sometimes they really do signify death! Another possible symbol of a death dream is threat. Whichever suits the dream depends on how well the theme was arrived at. Most death dreams are about major change and not about literal death though, so don't panic if you have one. Just patiently go through the analysis process, and make sense of it.
Also: Similar to fire. Death of the old programming brings room for the new program. ~ End of a condition, and the beginning of a new but unknown one.

Also: Dreaming about death is very common and it can be interpreted in many different ways. Death is usually a symbol of some type of closure or end. It implies an end to one thing and a beginning of another. Death dreams usually have positive symbolism. If you are the dead person in your dream, it could imply that you would like to leave all of your worries and struggles behind and begin anew. Dreaming about someone that you care about may express your fear about losing them. Dreaming that one of your parents died may express fear of loss, but it also may be an unconscious valve through which you release anger and other negative feelings. In some cultures dreaming about death and dying is a very good omen that represents longevity and prosperity.

Also: If you are the dead person in your dream it suggests that you world like to leave all of your worries and struggles behind and start a new.

Dying: End of a condition, and the beginning of a new but unknown one.

Suicide: Killing off aspects of self, creativity. Giving up, not facing problemDead Person: If the person recognized is dead in real life, there is an influence of someone from the past. Deer: Gentleness, timidity, swiftness.

Demolition: Major changes in dreamer's inner or outer life have been, or are being, undertaken; breakdown of old attitudes and approaches.

Dentist: Visiting a dentist signifies seeking out someone who can help with the way you function and present yourself in life, whose therapy may not be without discomfort, but whose professional help is necessary.

Descending: Conditions look negative; things are slowing down, coming to an end.

Desert or Wilderness: Loneliness, literally being deserted; lack of emotion or satisfaction; no creativity or growth in one's life; dry intellectualism; death; sexual barrenness. Occasionally as the symbol in the bible of wandering in the wilderness, which depicts the human sense of having no real meaning or direction, of being a wanderer in the infinity of time and decision; it shows the difficulty of being self-responsible and making decisions in the infinity of choices, and of honoring the self in such decisions.

Destruction: Any form of destruction, including any dream object capable of generating mass destruction (like a bomb or tornado) symbolizes massive power. So destruction in your dream often symbolizes fear of a loss of control of your most powerful feelings and emotions, ones so forceful they almost seem beyond your control. Any type of destruction can also represent fear of your true personal power, itself symbolizing who and what you really are. It is this fear of your true power, in fact, that is the basis of many nightmares.

This type of dream can also be a clear warning of the suppression of any of your emotions that are leading you at the time toward a potentially "lethal" explosion of energy. If you know this is your present interpretation, take immediate physical action to release the building pressure—talk to someone you can trust, beat the stuffing our pillows, throw rocks at the moon, go someplace where no on can hear you and scream and yell till you can't yell anymore—whatever it takes to release the buildup of the potentially destructive energy bottled up inside of you.

Destruction dreams can also, however, be telling about the awakening of what is generally called the Kundalini energy or power. Again, pay attention to your dream message and consciously work with this energy, preferably with someone who can how you how. Kundalini energy is exceptionally powerful and should be consciously worked with to direct its safe movement. It is not an accident that this kind of energy is often represented by a white cobra; the cobra blinds its prey before striking. What has caused, or will cause, the destruction: What has been destroyed? How will things be different after the destruction? Were people or animals injured or destroyed? How do you feel in your dream? Does this remind you of anything going on in your life right now?

Diamonds & Precious Stones: Illumination of superconscious truths, spiritual "jewels" of everlasting truth.See Spirit.

Dips or Holes in the Road: Obstacles which you must descend or become less to get through. See Transportation.

Directions: There are six basic directions...north, south, east, west, up and down. North is the difficult place. South is the easy place. East is going back to where we've been...retardation. West is moving forward...progress. Up is ascending in awareness and is usually more difficult. Down is descending in awareness and is usually easy to slide into. But the upward climb could also simply mean difficulty...and the downward slide could mean ease. Forward, like West, is progress. Backward, like East, is retardation. In some cases backward and forward can represent time flow from the past to the future. Left and right can also mean this. In Western culture things move from left to right, so left would be the past and right, the future. This should all be considered in the context of the dream.

Dirt: An inner drive or impulse that disgusts the Ego.

Disease: The word disease literally means out of ease. Before you begin to interpret this dream on a psychological or metaphysical level, first check your health. The dream could refer to physical or emotional health.

Divorce: Divorce is an archetype symbol of the separation of Love from Wisdom, Emotion from Action, Goodness from Truth, Spirit from Matter, and Emotion from Reason. Divorce is the conscious decision to end a relationship and the conscious and willful dissolving of a bond, contract, agreement, or partnership. Dreaming of a divorce can, of course, also be showing you unrecognized feelings about your current relationship, or some issues you may still have outstanding concerning an actual divorce or separation, even if the divorce was by death of one of the partners. A dream divorce can also be a pun. From who or what are you divorcing yourself? Why? How do you feel about it? How do you feel about divorce in general? What kinds of people generally get divorces? Who usually gains the most from a divorce? How will your life be different after the divorce?

Also: May be an expression of anger towards one's spouse; fear of or hope for breakup of marriage. Male dream: difficulty with one's feelings. Female dream: difficulty with social extroversion and intellect.
Dog: Masculine part of self. Loyalty. If vicious, need to redirect positively. ~ Dog also represents man's best friend but can turn on him. ~ A friend or companion, except when the dog is your own pet, or one you recognize.

Dove: Peace, love (cooing love birds).

Drowning: Drown: See Spirit.

Drugs: The interpretation of drugs in your dreams depends on the relationship, you have with drugs in your daily life and if they are doctor prescribed or not. If you are a drug user, then the drugs are an extension of what you normally do and you need to look at the other details of your dream to get a good interpretation. However, if you use drugs rarely or never, then this dream could represent a need to get well, to escape from daily stress, and a desire to get quick relief. The drugs could be suggesting a need for healing and getting in balance. Your unconscious mind may be suggesting outrageous things in hopes that you get the message to "have fun, dream dreams, and get out of your own head!" Please keep in mind that the purpose of dreams is to raise our consciousness and to assist us in having better lives. The message in the dream about drug use is most likely not encouraging you to use drugs but it may represent a need to feel better or get better.

E

Eagle: Spiritual heights, master of the air, freedom. Mastery of 3 dimensional space.

Earthquake: Your foundation shaken. ~ Upheaval of a situation or life itself. The sense of tearing apart a condition.

Eating: Partaking in the abundance of life. Enjoying and receiving nourishment from what is yours in life. ~ Nourishment needed. May be emotional, physical, mental, etc.

Also: To dream that you are eating alone, signifies loss, loneliness, and depression. Eating may be a replacement for companionship and provide comfort for you. Also consider the pun, "what's eating you up?" in reference to anxiety that you may be feeling. To dream that you are eating with others, denotes prosperous undertakings, personal gain, and joyous spirits. To dream that you are overeating or not eating enough, signifies your need and lack of spirituality and fulfillment in your waking life. Food can represent love, friendship, ambition, sex or pleasure in your life. Thus,  food is seen as a metaphor to fulfill and gratify our hunger of love and desires.
(see also Food)
Egg: New birth. New condition or idea being born. Check the number of eggs and their color.

Electrical System: Your life energy being used to maintain feeling of security. See Transportation.

Elephant: Ancient Hindu good luck symbol. It represents someone who is viewed as formidable and perhaps slow to respond. Someone or something forgotten. ~ Powerful part of self. Gentle, helpful. Can be destructive if angry.

Elevator: Going up and down in the elevator may symbolize going from one state of consciousness to another. Messages from the unconscious may be accessible. Some believe that the elevator may be a symbol of a boring and mechanical sex life. On a more pragmatic note, the elevator may simply represent the "ups and downs" of life. If you are ascending, then you may perceive your current situation as optimistic and moving upward. If you are descending, you may be experiencing some negativity and helplessness.

Also: Common dream metaphor for different levels of awareness in the mind. Also can represent transitions in our careers, lifestyles, or romance. When we enter an elevator, we expect to “arrive at a new level.” Many elevator dreams concern difficulty arriving at the desired location. The elevator may not open where it is supposed to, or it may ascend or descend without end. Going down in an elevator is a common metaphor for entering into deeper levels of subconscious awareness. Elevators that fall reflect feelings of being out of control, and are related to falling dreams. Please see falling.

Also: These are a form of transportation. Especially for those of us in need of a short-cut! Elevators can reveal things about the physical body that are important. If the building is a familiar one in the dream (regardless of how familiar or known it is in the walking life) the dream is about one's own physical, emotional or mental health, depending on where the elevator takes you. It can also take you to the present (ground floors) or to the past (basement, parking lots, store rooms). It can take you to the future (roof, penthouse, upper floors). It can take you to your intestinal or lower body areas (basement- stomach; parking lot or ground floor - legs and feet; windows - eyes (outlook); upper floors - head and ego.

Emotion: Any emotions you experience in a dream are doubly important because your dreams are all about feelings anyway. So when you encounter strong emotions in your dream, you are giving yourself a reinforced signal that is clearly saying "Hey, you up there!! This is where we are and this is how parts of us feel about it." What are the major feelings in your dream? What are the feelings of each person and object? What has caused these feelings? How would your life change if you had these same feelings when you are awake? How would your dream have been different if you had experienced the opposite feeling? What would you have to do to change these emotions? How do you feel about all of that?

Also: There is a level of human experience which is typified by intense emotional and physical response to life. Such emotions and bodily drives may remain almost entirely unconscious until touched by exploring our dream content in the right setting. When such feelings and bodily movements arise, as they do in dreams, we may be amazed at their power and clarity. If we take away the images and events occurring in a dream and simply look to see what feelings or emotions are evident, the dream is often more understandable than if we try to interpret the symbols. Feelings in dreams are nearly always undistorted. We therefore do not need to interpret them, simply to acknowledge them and see if we can recognize where they occur in waking life.

Also: The images in a dream may be the way we unconsciously pictorialize our flux of feelings and the play of internal energy flows. For instance love or sexual drive can give rise to physical movement—as in sexual intercourse. Repression of sex or love also represses such physical movements, leading to tension and conflict, which might be presented in the drama of a dream. How we meet the emotions in our dreams illustrated our habitual method of dealing with them. Dreams give us a safe area to express emotions which might be difficult or dangerous to release socially. Anger in a dream may be expressing what we failed to express in a waking encounter, or it might be our habitual response. It may also be directed against ourselves. Dreams also contain many positive emotions. Sometimes they present a new aspect of feeling which is life enhancing. A person who habitually felt at odds with her father and relatives experienced a dream in which she felt forgiveness for the first time. This was entirely new for her and led to a reconciliation with her family. Some feeling states in a dream are subtle, and may be more evident in terms of the symbols than the feelings. A gray drear environment suggests depression and lack of pleasure. A sunny light environment with flowers and color shows pleasure and good feelings. A country landscape depicts quite a different feeling state to a smoky busy city street. Whatever feelings or emotions we meet in our dreams, many of them are bound to be habitual responses we have to life. Where these habits are negative we can begin to change them by working with the dream images.

Empty Fields: The subconscious ready for planting ideas and programming. When you return later and it is all grown up with flowers, trees or weeds, it represents your set of memory complexes or karma.

Escape: One of the most common of dream scenarios. Desire to get away from a present issue or situation that threatens the well being of the dreamer. Physical escape in a dream equals a psychological or emotional escape.

Time to move in a new direction, take new action, make new plans. If you're unable to escape from a recurrent frightening situation, use Exercise #11, to change the situation.

Also: Escaping, chase, or monsters usually represents the dreamers habit of avoiding an issue/subject. Is all well once you escape? If so it is O.K. to avoid the subject. If you escape and something bad happens you should deal with the issue.

Exit: Getting out. The way out of a given situation.

Eye: Window of the soul. A sense of soul searching. What color are they?

F

Falling: Loss of faith or confidence.

Also: Dreams of falling are common and most often represent a strong feeling that you are either already out of or about to lose control of the subject of your dream. Falling can also symbolize your fear of falling into or away from the subject of your dream. Falling can also represent your fear of failing at just about anything. This fear is often, but not always, related to your work or personal performance in some area of your life at the time.

Also: As an archetype, it was through "the fall" that the human species moved from the passive dependence of an infant on an outside source to take care of all of its needs to consciously accepting personal responsibility. This movement in consciousness carried the human being to the level of one who understands the differences between higher and lower morality. This "knowledge of good and evil" propelled humanity into the learning phase of the struggle between these polar opposites. It is this internal struggle within each of us, and the knowledge gained through it, that helps us develop the qualities necessary for our next level of growth.

Also: And falling makes a great pun. For what or whom are you falling? Did you fall for that old one again? Are you about to hit bottom? Are you afraid you will fall flat on your face or backside? From what or from where are you falling? Where will you land? Will it be a soft or hard landing? How do you feel while you are falling. What caused you to fall? Were you pushed, were you careless, or did you jump? What will happen after your fall? Why? How do you feel about that?

Also: Some dream researchers suggest falling is one of the main themes in dreams. During our development or growth we "fall" from our mother's womb when ripe; being dropped by a parent must be our earliest sense of insecurity; we fall many times as we learn to stand and walk; as we explore our boundaries in running, climbing, jumping and riding, falling is a big danger, at times it could mean death. Out of this we create the ways falling is used in dreams. In general, falling represents loss of confidence; threat to usual sources of security such as relationship, source of money, social image, beliefs; tension. Sometimes it is loss of social grace; losing face; moral failure-—falling into temptation; coming down to earth from a too lofty attitude; sexual surrender.

By learning to meet our insecurities we can dare more in life. This is in essence the same as meeting the fear of falling off our bike as we learn to ride. If we never master the fear we cannot ride. Therefore some dreams take falling into realms beyond fear. Going fast to an edge and falling: could mean overwork and danger of breakdown of health.

Also: This is a common dream which usually represents underlying fears and feelings of inadequacy and helplessness. Interpret your dream by considering your primary fears, current difficulties, and situations in your life that seem to be on a downward spiral, especially those situations that seem outside of your control (financial, romantic,etc.). Some people believe that if you keep falling in your dream and don't wake up that you will die at the point of impact. This is absolutely not true. In a falling dream you wake up out of fear and not because of danger of dying.

Also: Dreams of falling almost always reflect feelings of being out of control - of not knowing “where we are going to land.” When we have a falling dream, we are encouraged to look for areas in our lives where we feel especially powerless.

Also: It may indicate that you are not being supported in something, or that you have been let down or disappointed in some way.

Fear: Fear in a dream mirrors a repressed fear that must be dealt with in real life.

Feathers: Symbols of attainment or mastery of superconscious truths.

Festival: Celebration

Field: Immersion in the natural cycle of the Earth—the openness of the sky, the span of the landscape. The condition of the field is usually the dream message. Is it barren? Overgrown? Bountiful? Wild prairie or meadow? If an agricultural field, its yield is the metaphorical result of what has been sown and cultivated. (Empower Station)

Also: Fields often appear with animals and suggest the dreamers contact with what is natural in themselves. Also, freedom from social pressure, one's sense of self when away from other people, with one's own natural inclinations.

Empty Fields: The subconscious ready for planting ideas and programming. When you return later and it is all grown up with flowers, trees or weeds, it represents your set of memory complexes or karma.

Fight: Usually, the dreamer's anger or frustration; may express difficulties in regard to independence or self confidence; desire to hurt another person or damage their reputation. A fight also depicts fighting for our space; our values or honor; ewe may fight for survival, for our health, fight crime (resist criminal impulses); we may also feel attacked by another person's opinions; assaulted by sexual desire; fight against depression; have a conflict over moral issues. Idioms: fight it out; fight like cat and dog; look for a fight.

Fire: The cleanser or purifier. Relates to "getting something started or going". Could relate to romance. ~ Life force, spiritual power

Firetruck: Indicates something is already happening. Something exciting. Something cleansing. Possibly something painful also. Could relate to romance.

Fish: Spiritual denizens (ourselves) in their primitive state, i.e., before evolutionary spiritual development in the earth. ~ Eating fish: Integrating our inner realizations. Also: Generally a spiritual element in the dream, signalling that the dreamer is plumbing deep into the Collective Unconscious. ~ Fishing: creating a receptive state of consciousness which allows the deep insights or processes to become known; trying to find spiritual nourishment.

Also: To see fish swimming in your dream, signifies insights from your unconscious mind. Thus to catch a fish, represents insights which have been brought to the surface. Alternatively, fish are symbolic of your beliefs/spirituality, luck, energy and nourishment. To see a dead fish, signifies disappointment and loss of power/wealth. To dream of cooking and/or eating fish, indicates that you are incorporating your new realizations with your spiritual feelings and knowledge. Consider also the common phrases "fishing for compliments", "like a cold fish", "fish out of water" or something that is "fishy" about a situation.
Flashlight and Headlights: Focused illumination of your path or goal.

Flood: Floods almost always symbolize excesses of emotion, that you are feeling completely overwhelmed by them at the time of your dream, and that as a result some part of you feels strongly threatened and in danger for its very life; see Drown. As an archetype, a flood symbolizes the Waters of Truth pouring forth from human logic rather than from Spirit, and represents the first cause of erroneous thinking and opinions, one of our first steps away from Truth. In the same vein, a deluge is an ancient symbol for the awakening of the human mind, but an awakening in ignorance and error, a mind out of control. A deluge can destroy forms but never forces or energies, always leaving open the potential for re-emergence into a new form of life. Consequently, a deluge often symbolizes the final stage of any cycle. See Spirit.

Flowers: Friends and personal relationships

Flying: Confidence. ~ Free from physical limitations; spiritual journey. ~ An out-of-body experience; astral projection. Total freedom.

Food: Abundance and plenty. Very positive. The more, the better. ~ In connection with a particular person: being nourished by or hungry for relationship with them; enjoyment of sexuality with them. ~ Pleasure and indulgence.

Also: Food is symbolic of a large variety of things. It could symbolize pleasure and indulgence. To the perpetual dieter, the dream could have a "compensatory" function where the food that is denied to the individual during the day shows up in the dream state. Dreams could additionally symbolize physical, mental, spiritual and emotional nourishment.

Also: The different types of food can symbolize a wide range of things. Generally, fruit is symbolic of sensuality. Frozen foods may imply your cold emotions and frigid ways.

Also: To see meals in your dream, signifies that you dwell too much on trivial matters and it will divert your attention from more important engagements and matters.

(see also Eating)

Forest: They may represent your unconscious or your "mental space". If you are lost in the woods it may be a reflection of feelings of confusion and lack of clear direction. ~ The confusing, sometimes frightening landscape of the Unconscious, full of death and rebirth in an endless symbiotic cycle. One is easily lost, and must blaze an individual trail through the thick undergrowth and twilight canopy, encountering the forest's inhabitants (drives, instincts, complexes, Shadow) along the way. Dante's dream-like Inferno opens, 'Midway through life's journey ... I woke to find myself alone in a dark wood ..."

Also: Maybe you should get in touch with nature or deal with something more natural. If you were hiding in the forest, you could be doing the same thing in real life. ~ A return to nature, or it could be a symbol of the unconscious mind or a need to get away from the materialistic.

Fox: Cunning, clever, master of the analytical mind.

Fruit: The results of an action. Karma. Cause and effect.
